What Is the Country with the Worst Traffic?

In the US, most surveys rank Washington DC as having the worse traffic in the country but it’s nothing compared to traffic you can experience in other countries. In fact, there’s an ongoing battle between different countries as to which is the country with the worst traffic. Why don’t you continue reading and decide for yourself. In some drivers’ books, all these countries listed below sound like they have a horrific traffic problem with very little light at the end of the proverbial traffic tunnel.

If you think the 74 hours a year that drivers from the DC area complain about is anything to gripe about, wait until you hear about traffic in Brazil. Most major cities are suffering from too many cars on the road. Their economy has improved and so citizens have money to buy cars. Unfortunately, the government is failing to improve road infrastructure so this is what happens.

In Sao Paolo, Brazil two years ago, traffic was 182 miles long based on accumulated traffic lines. It’s not unusual to spend 4 hours behind the wheel every day. According to Brazilian economists, 1,000 cars are being sold every day and even with the road space rationing law which restricts certain cars off the roads on certain days, it’s still a nightmare.

Last year, China was on all major dailies and online sites with its worst traffic jam which lasted 11 days to clear. The gridlock was phenomenal because of a combination of trucks, delivery vans, road work, and private cars. Since this black mark which the New York Times called “The Great Chinese Gridlock of 2010,” China has begun enforcing certain laws. One is the refusal to allow non-Beijing plates from entering major roads during rush hour and limiting new cars on the road by restricting the issuance of new plates to 20,000 a month. Not much is being said about new road infrastructure so these measures are just not long term and 1005 effective.
